“The future of the natural world, on which we all depend, is in our hands” Sir David Attenborough
I reach my potential – Each child’s journey in Forest School is their own. The sessions are designed to develop knowledge, skills, understanding of the world around them and to build confidence, resilience and self-esteem.
I am healthy – Being outdoors, embracing nature, using our senses promotes healthy bodies and minds. Children embrace the woods, have opportunities to climb, crawl and simply sit and watch nature. The children use large gross motor skills along with fine motor and hand-eye coordination through tasks and play. We cook from fresh over the fire pit. Allowing the children to see the ingredients from start to end product.
I have opportunities – The children in nursery and reception have weekly sessions and year 1-4 have 7 sessions over an academic year. Children throughout the year use tools, have fires, climb trees, make nature crafts and build wildlife homes. They plant seeds, watch them grow, harvest veg and fruit. The children learn to compost and the impacts on nature.
I am happy and safe – Forest School is a safe place for the children to take the journey where they want it to go. They are encouraged to take risks, or relax under the trees or lay in a hammock. They can use their imagination in one of the three dens, or make mini bug or fairy houses. During these times they often build a different friendship group as everyone decides their learning through interests and peer support.
I have a voice – In Forest School children use the plan, do, review system. They are given many opportunities to express ideas, make choices and learn from others. Taking turns in conversations and building confidence. They work together to review their learning.
