Intent, Implementation and Impact
Our curriculum ethos has been specifically designed for our learning community and it supports us to plan, teach and evaluate our success.
I have a voice
At Appletree we believe learning a language isn’t just about vocabulary and grammar—it’s about gaining the ability to express yourself and truly have a voice in another culture or community. “Learning a language is more than mastering words; it’s claiming a voice in a new world.”
I reach my potential
Our ambitious curriculum encourages every child to reach their potential. Pupils will develop their knowledge and understanding of a new language and of the world around them. We believe learning a language opens doors to new ideas, cultures, and opportunities, fostering creativity, personal growth, and future success.
I have opportunities
At Appletree we use Language Angels to teach a carefully planned sequence of lessons, across the whole school, ensuring progressive coverage of skills required by the National Curriculum. Pupils have the opportunity to participate in a weekly, fun, interactive french club, provided by Lingotot https://www.lingotot.com/
To promote a love of languages and to celebrate cultural differences we provide additional opportunities for children to learn about France, its geography and its culture and traditions. We celebrate International and European Languages Day and other special celebrations in France, for example ‘Bastille Day’. We regularly run a french tuck shop where pupils can use their knowledge and skills to greet the seller and ask for a croissant for example, putting the big idea of speaking french in a shop into practice.
I am happy and safe
At Appletree, we believe learning a new language helps children feel happy and safe. It builds confidence, encourages friendships, and teaches respect for different cultures. When children can communicate and understand others, they feel included and secure, which supports their well-being and personal growth.
At Appletree we ensure lessons are vibrant, practical and fun which promotes happiness. We have seen first hand that learning a new language strengthens memory, sharpens focus, and keeps young minds active and resilient, thus promoting happiness and well-being.
