Grow your Learning in Physical Education

"
“Sport has literally changed my life. It has given me a lot of confidence, a lot of courage, and a lot of discipline.” — Serena Williams

At Appletree, we believe that Physical Education is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well being. Our high quality P.E. programme develops knowledge skills and understanding so that our children can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.

Our P.E. programme aims to contribute to the personal development, health and wellbeing, enjoyment, success and achievement of all pupils across the curriculum and beyond. It allows our children to learn, think and make decisions in different ways in response to creative, competitive and challenging activities. P.E. also helps our children to develop personally and socially through working in teams and undertaking different roles and responsibilities.

Intent, Implication and Impact

We aim to provide a broad range of competitive, creative and challenging activities that build children’s confidence and promote healthy, active lifestyles. Our curriculum encourages pupils to reflect on their performance, make decisions independently, and express ideas through physical activity. We support children in developing problem‑solving skills, communicating effectively, and taking responsibility for their own improvement. Above all, we ensure PE takes place in a happy, safe environment where every child can thrive and enjoy sport

I Have a Voice

At Appletree, we believe that Physical Education provides children with opportunities to express themselves, communicate their ideas and make decisions about their own learning. They take on different roles and responsibilities, developing leadership and teamwork skills that help them become confident voices within their school community. Our curriculum encourages children to evaluate their own and others’ performances, articulate strengths, identify areas for improvement and share their ideas.

I Reach My Potential

Our high‑quality PE programme aims to develop knowledge, skills and understanding so that children can perform with increasing competence and confidence. Lessons are carefully sequenced so that prior learning is built upon, allowing each child to progress at an appropriate pace.  Whether learning fundamental movement skills in Key Stage 1 or applying complex tactical and technical knowledge in Key Stage 2, every child is supported to achieve their personal best and reach their full potential.

I Am Healthy

Physical Education at Appletree Gardens plays a vital role in promoting pupils’ physical development, wellbeing and positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles. Through creative, competitive and challenge‑based activities, children develop agility, balance, coordination, flexibility, strength and stamina. They also gain an understanding of how physical activity contributes to lifelong health and wellbeing.

I Am Safe

We are committed to providing a safe, supportive and positive environment for all children to take part in PE and sport. Our curriculum ensures that pupils learn age‑appropriate skills in a way that promotes safety, confidence and independence. In team games and partnered activities, children learn to collaborate respectfully, follow rules and understand the importance of keeping themselves and others safe. By nurturing a safe environment, we enable children to be confident, resilient and fully engaged in physical activity.

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme. It celebrates schools' commitment to developing competitive sport within their school and community. It allows schools to assess their PE provision and create an action plan for improvement. Appletree  currently holds the Plantinum Award.  The Platinum award can be awarded after completing five consecutive years of the Gold standard.

We were the first school in North Tyneside to achieve the Platinum award back in 2022 and have continued to maintain this.
